Valerie Jodoin Keaton is a Canadian-American photographer from Montreal, certified in Professional Photography (Dawson College, 2001). Her photographic work has often engaged subjects who might commonly be thought of as anachronisms, as those whose cultural time has passed or might soon disappear. In 2001, she exhibited an intimate photo-documentary on the Montreal Grey Nuns at the Marguerite d'Youville museum. Her next photographic project, Backstage, was an insight on rock artists backstage. Her use of retro techniques to capture influential contemporary musicians creates a timeless homage to the men and women that help to shape music today.
Backstage was published in 2009 by Varia Publications and gained much appreciation around the world, including that of art historian/author Gail Buckland, who presented Valerie Jodoin Keaton's work at the Brooklyn Museum for the exhibition Who Shot Rock & Roll, A Photographic History From 1955 To the Present (now touring the U.S.A.) alongside photographs by Richard Avedon and Annie Leibovitz, among others. Part of her Backstage series is also currently presented at the Quartier des Spectacles on Ste-Catherine Street in Montreal (Place Émilie Gamelin), in collaboration with Mouvement Art Public. The show ended in July 2012.
In 2012, Valerie Jodoin Keaton was selected by the Annenberg Space For Photography in Los Angeles as one of the best photographers of Who Shot Rock & Roll. The public had the chance to see Valerie Jodoin Keaton's photo series Backstage during the museum's Slideshow Night Event.
